Residence permits to people who have the right to retaining citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or aliens of Lithuanian descent
The historical situation of Lithuania determined the fact that many individuals of Lithuanian descent reside abroad. An individual of Lithuanian descent is a person whose parents or grandparents or one of the parents or grandparents either are or were Lithuanians and who considers himself to be a Lithuanian and declares this by written application. Also, especially many people who had citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania fled Lithuania before 11 March 1990 and retained the right to restore citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania..
The laws grant the right to obtain both temporary and permanent residence permit to these two groups of individuals.
When submitting documents to issue a residence permit on one of the above-mentioned basis, together with other documents (an application, the personal document, the visa (if the visa-free regime is not applied) it is necessary to submit the documents proving that a person is of Lithuania descent or has the right to restore citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania. In case of the absence of these documents, one can appeal to the archives in Lithuania. According to the data stored in the archives, a certificate shall be issued about the existence of a certain fact (in this case about having citizenship until 15 June 1940 or Lithuanian descent, or other documents, which are stored in the archive). Having submitted this certificate to a diplomatic mission of the Republic of Lithuania abroad, the territorial Police Office or the Migration Department, a document officially certifying that you are an alien of Lithuanian descent or have the right to restore citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania shall be prepared.
When issuing a temporary or permanent residence permit to the aliens who people of Lithuanian descent or who have the right to restore citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania in the procedure established by the Law on Citizenship, no requirements to have an adequate dwelling, health insurance, enough means or regular income are imposed o them. It is necessary for an alien first to obtain the document certifying that he/she has the right to restore citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania or that he/she is of Lithuanian descent; he/she can apply for a residence permit at once if he/she has all the necessary documents.
The individuals who have temporary residence permits issued on the basis of having Lithuanian descent or the right to restore citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania and the individuals who have permanent residence permits are exempt from the obligation to have a work permit in Lithuania.
Permits are issued for a five-year period.
